The Irving Building project is about building and sustaining the community in East Oxford through delivering affordable and connected homes with meaningful engagement to the wider community using retail, cafe and community space. In this bid, Oxfordshire Community Land Trust (OCLT), with partners Oxford Cohousing, Kindling Co-operative and Makespace, proposed to build 24 mixed-tenure homes with half being permanently affordable. To facilitate this, the Irving Building would be retrofitted to contain six apartments and a new terrace of six Passivhaus homes would have been built on an adjacent street. The proposal offers a radically different approach to the standard development model and builds on neighbourliness and wellbeing from the start. The project was proposed to be built using a high-quality, sustainable and fabric first approach which will ensure lower running costs for individual residents and lower impact on local infrastructure.
